F1 2020: The Rest of the Pack

Comments

It’s tough being labelled ‘the best of the rest,’ but these four teams will attempt to avoid finishing near the bottom, and with a glass half full approach, try to challenge the top six.

The stakes are high, especially for Haas, who could in fact leave the sport if owner Gene Haas doesn’t see much improvement.

Alpha Tauri

Drivers: Pierre Gasly (France), Daniil Kvyat (Russia)

Formerly known as Toro Rosso, the Alpha Tauri team had two podiums last year after earning just one in the previous 13 seasons. They’ve got two experienced drivers in Gasly and Kvyat and it’s not far-fetched to think that they could end up challenging for fourth or fifth place. They’re trying to reposition themselves as a Red Bull ‘sister’ team as opposed to a ‘junior’ team, but they’ll need some positive results to do that.

Alfa Romeo

Drivers: Kimi Raikkonen (Finland), Antonio Giovinazzi (Italy)

The Swiss-based team formerly known as Sauber had a somewhat disappointing pre-season with a car that didn’t seem to bring much to the table. Raikkonen is still a world class driver and if the car can improve, there’s no doubt he can score some points. All in all, not much to get too excited about.

Haas

Drivers: Romain Grosjean (France), Kevin Magnussen (Denmark)

If you watched Drive To Survive, you’ll know all about Gunther Steiner. He’s the Team Principal of Haas and while he seems like a lovely guy around the house, cooking pasta with his wife and daughter, he’s pretty much the reason Netflix has to put a ‘coarse language’ warning on the documentary series. At one point, the fiery Steiner threatened to sack both of his drivers, but here they are again – and they’re both capable. It’s an important year for the team, with owner Gene Haas demanding some better results.

Williams

Drivers: George Russell (England), Nicholas Latifi (Canada)

The legendary team that brought you Nigel Mansell, Keke Rosberg and Alan Jones has fallen on hard times and is just a shadow of its former self. There have been some positive noises coming out of the English team and there’s no doubt that George Russell is a talent but this is a team that hasn’t had a first place finish since 2012. Newcomer Latifi comes from Formula 2.
