The Spread — Conference Championship

Defence might win you championships but offence wins us money.

As I scrolled through last week’s vast array of bet options for the NFL playoffs on my Sportsbet app, I kept coming back to one bet type in the Kansas City-Houston clash and it was $8!!!

Patrick Mahomes is that dude — we all know of his scoring capabilities whilst Deshaun Watson is not far behind Mahomes with his wizardry. In week six, Houston went into Arrowhead Stadium and scored 31 points, so we knew they could find the end zone against the Chiefs.

The scene was pretty well set when the Texans stunningly went up 24-0 in the opening quarter. Mahomes and the boys were always going to rally. And rally they did. Within 15 minutes of playing time, KC was back in front in a playoff game which had to be seen to be believed. Houston slowed significantly but managed one more TD to nail the 30-point mark and followers of The Spread rejoiced and collected their cash.

An $8 winner might be hard to nail twice in two weeks but with Kansas City hosting Tennessee and Green Bay visiting San Francisco, we’ll give it a crack.

These Titans keep rolling. Derrick Henry is a giant man among large men as Tennessee has ridden him to back-to-back playoff upsets and now finds itself in an AFC Conference Championship game. Slowing Henry may not be something the Chiefs defence is capable of but its offence might. Scoring heavily often and early would eliminate Henry’s ability to wear out the defenders as the game goes on.

KC are heavy favourites — and deservedly so — with many wondering when Tennessee’s bubble will burst. Ryan Tannehill was a back-up as this season commenced, so is it time for his run to end? The Titans have a gritty defence but can they — or anyone — slow down Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Damien Williams?

The answers to those questions will determine the game. After dropping 51 points last week, I have Kansas City cruising to victory in this one.

Tip: Kansas City 33, Tennessee 17

Suggested Bets;

Kansas City -7.5 ($1.90)

Travis Kelce anytime TD ($2)

Both teams to score 20+ points NO ($2)

GREEN BAY at SAN FRANCISCO (Monday 10:40am)

The beauty of this Conference title game is we’ve seen this match-ups earlier in the regular season. Back in November, the 49ers walloped Green Bay, 37-8, and announced themselves as one of the top teams in football.

They held Aaron Rodgers to just 104 passing yards and sacked him five times. Across the field, Jimmy Garoppolo only had six incompletions and threw for two scores in a neat and accurate display.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has his squad humming, utilising offensive weapons like George Kittle, Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert and others. A 13-3 season was unexpected to most but both sides of the San Francisco roster have been in sync and on point.

The Packers are heavy underdogs but whenever you have the best player on the field you have a shot. Rodgers is an all-time great quarterback and he will need to put in an all-time playoff performance to overcome the boys from the Bay Area.

Tip: San Francisco 24, Green Bay 21

Suggested Bets;

Total FG +3.5 ($2)

1st Drive Result PUNT ($1.78)

TEN-KC both teams to score 20+ points NO ($2)

GB-SF total FG +3.5 ($2)

= $4
