Epsom Day – All The Group Races

Comments

Randwick takes centre stage with three Group 1’s, the Epsom, Flight Stakes and Metropolitan. There is also a nice support card of Group races, with the babies stepping out in the Gimcrack Stakes and Breeders’ Plate.

Race 1 – Gimcrack Stakes (1000m, Group 3)

Two-year-old fillies make their race debut here.

Snowden runners Catch Me, Mayaaseh and Satin Socks are all well fancied in betting and both trialled well.

Mayaaseh looks a natural. She responded when asked and did everything right to win her trial. Catch Me was a little slow away, but was quickly into stride and has plenty of speed.

Waller’s Originaire was green in her heat, she gets a lugging bit which might help her chances.

Diddles is speedy and won two trials in good fashion.

Best: Mayaaseh. Dangers: Catch Me, Diddles.

Race 2 – Breeders’ Plate (1000m, Group 3)

Exceed The Stars and Fiery Red went toe to toe in their trial and Exceed The Stars snuck home in the fastest time of the 14 two-year-old trials.

For mine Slightly Red, with the better draw and Waterhouse/Bott polish has the edge.

Kremeric was very green and ran out badly in his trial. Once balanced the Waller trained colt got his mind on the job.

Autocratic was ridden quietly out of gates in his trial, but worked true to the line and should get the gun run from barrier two.

Best: Slightly Red. Dangers: Exceed The Stars, Autocratic.

Race 4 – Hill Stakes (2000m, Group 2)

After two nice runs from a break Egg Tart gets her chance to win. She was super behind Winx in the G1 George Main (1600m) and just needs a solid tempo.

Ace High was close to the speed in the George Main and battled away or fourth. With Classic Uniform scratched Ace High might lead and he’ll be tough to run down.

From the same race It’s Somewhat finished off nicely and looks well placed here out to 2000m.

Best: Egg Tart. Dangers: It’s Somewhat, Ace High.

Race 5 – Premiere Stakes (1200m, Group 2)

Redzel was brilliant in his first-up win lumping 60.5kgs, then missed a run through muscle soreness. Setbacks always put doubt in the mind, but Snowden’s wouldn’t risk him if he wasn’t right.

Trapeze Artist was not at home in the heavy going and ran well behind Home Of The Brave when resuming. Gets a better surface, but second-up record is poor.

Dual G1 winning sprinter Santa Ana Lane caught the eye when he made up a lot of ground first-up in Melbourne. Under-rated sprinter that will be better for the run.

In Her Time resumes, had a soft trial at Newcastle. Has a new trainer in Kris Lees, who will bring out the best.

Invincible Star G3 winner, lightly raced, fitness edge.

Best: Redzel. Dangers: Santa Ana Lane, Trapeze Artist.

Race 6 – Flight Stakes (1600m, Group 1)

The top hopes raced in the G2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at their last start. Once winner Miss Fabulass found clear running she let down quickly and put them to the sword, extra distance should pose no problem.

Oohood was the luckless runner, three deep, no cover, game fourth, but wide alley again.

Fiesta was also deep and tired late for third, slight query at the 1600m.

Maid Of Heaven went back from a wide gate and finished off strongly, although did no work early and middle.

Fundamentalist, G1 placed, he’s huge odds and his eighth was better than it looked. Chances improve if track rain-affected.

Pretty In Pink got home well for third behind Miss Fabulass, connections want her ridden closer today.

Best: Miss Fabulass. Dangers: Oohood, Pretty In Pink.

Race 7 – Epsom Handicap (1600m, Group 1)

Chris Waller has eight runners, with D’argento and Unforgotten fighting for favouritism.

D’argento third-up, comes off a great second to Home Of The Brave in heavy going, rails draw and better track. Unforgotten won G2 Chelmsford this track and distance latest.

Pierata was very game and nabbed on the line, after wide run in G3 Bill Ritchie. Better alley this time.

Siege Of Quebec won the Ritchie, wide barrier no help, but hard to knock.

Roughie Duca Valentinois was not disgraced (4th) in same race.

None fitter than Arbeitsam, carries no weight, will race on speed and could prove hard to run down.

Best: D’argento. Dangers: Pierata, Arbeitsam, Unforgotten.

Race 8 – The Metropolitan (2400m, Group 1)

Brimham Rocks and Waller stablemate Libran had similar runs finishing just behind winner Avilius in the Kingston Town Stakes (2000m).

Both will appreciate longer trip here, but Brimham Rocks drops 5kgs and lightweights have a good record in this race. Waller’s other main chances are Patrick Erin and The Lord Mayor.

Weir trained Big Duke ran second in this last year. Did his best work late in the Kingston Town, had three runs in now and should be close to peak.

Sin To Win (3rd)and Miss Admiration (won)met in the Colin Stephen last week. Seven day back-up shouldn’t worry. Any sting out of the track will help Sin To Win.

Sedanzer had tough run latest, better drawn and not the worst.

Best: Brimham Rocks. Dangers: Big Duke, Libran, Miss Admiration.
