Rising staying star Avilius is now the second most popular runner with punters for Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
On the back of some solid backing, including a $10,000 wager, Avilius ($13) has surpassed second favourite Magic Circle ($10) as the second most popular runner behind $4.50 favourite Yucatan.
Yucatan is clearly the top pick for the Cup, but there’s been a consistent wave of support for Avilius. He’s prepared by James Cummings, whose late grandfather Bart Cummings won the Cup 12 times, so there is an element of sentiment there.
Meanwhile the Gai Waterhouse-Adrian Bott trained Thinkin’ Big is the stand-out for punters in Saturday’s Victoria Derby.
Thinkin’ Big heads betting on $2.90 and holds six-times more money than Extra Brut ($9.00). Second favourite Aramayo ($6.50) is unwanted.
