Caulfield holds pride of place hosting three Group I’s on Saturday with the Blue Diamond, Futurity and Oakleigh Plate to be decided whilst the momentum continues towards the Golden Slipper and The Championships at Rosehill with three Group II’s set down for decision.
Race 6 The Futurity Stakes (1400m) Group I
The Godolphin mare Alizee has come back in terrific order this preparation winning the Christmas Classic and Expressway Stakes in Sydney. She’s already a dual Group I winner defeating her own sex in the Coolmore Legacy and Flight Stakes.
Looks set to handle the males at the top level on Saturday stepping up to 1400m. Alizee looks set to assume the mantle of best mare in the land when Winx retires and she is the bet of the day for us.
The tip: (11) Alizee ($2.40)
Race 7 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) Group I
The Blue Diamond is wide open with Sportsbet offering $5.00 in the field with the impressive debut winner Loving Gaby at the head of proceedings. We are sticking with the Jason Warren-trained Brooklyn Hustle who could not have been more impressive on debut winning at Moonee Valley.
Although she was beaten in the prelude resuming, the daughter of Starspangledbanner looked open to improvement. The Blue Diamond is often a high-pressure race and this year looks to be no exception. Brooklyn Hustle will settle of the pace but will be getting home hard in the straight.
The tip: (13) Brooklyn Hustle ($11.00)
Race 8 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) Group I
Nature Strip is arguably the best short-course horse in the land, and we reckon he will prove that by winning the Oakleigh Plate. Now with Chris Waller, Nature Strip has won nine of his 13 starts and won the Rubiton Stakes over the Caulfield 1100m resuming last start with ridiculous ease.
Drawn perfectly in barrier five, expecting Nature Strip to kick clear on the corner and I doubt there is any horse in the race that can run him down.
The tip: (3) Nature Strip ($2.20)
Race 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) Group II
The ruling Golden Slipper favourite Tassort makes his return to racing in the Silver Slipper Stakes after winning the Golden Gift at Rosehill last November by over five-lengths. In our opinion there is a question mark on the Golden Gift form as there was nothing special about the speed ratings produced from the race and there hasn’t been any subsequent winners come out of the event.
However Tassort did win easily and may well win easily again but we want to have another look at Tassort on Saturday at the $1.65 early quote and happy to have something on the first starter Faretti from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable to cause an upset. A winner of both his trials running time on both occasion $5.50 looks better value.
The tip: (7) Faretti ($5.50)
Race 5 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) Group II
With Winx likely to retire at the end of her current campaign, the title of Australia’s best horse will be up for grabs and The Autumn Sun is right at the top of the tree in contenders to take over from the mare.
The Autumn Sun hit the headlines with an explosive victory in the Caulfield Guineas before spelling and returns to racing on Saturday. $1.50 is the early quote but The Autumn Sun only has to return close to his best to be handling the field he opposes on Saturday easily. The value in the race looks to be the quinella with Purple Sector a good thing to run second.
The tip: (1) The Autumn Sun ($1.50)
Race 7 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) Group II
The Millie Fox Stakes is somewhat of a lottery with at least seven genuine chances including I Am Serious who heads early betting markets as a $3.40 chance. The value in the race may well be the Tony McEvoy-trained Cool Passion.
Looked a half-run short when run down late by Champagne Cuddles in the Breeders Classic resuming at Warwick Farm last start and Alassio who finished third franked the form by winning at Randwick last week. Cool Passion will be right on the speed launching from barrier five and fitter second-up will take plenty of running down again.
The tip: (5) Cool Passion ($6.50)
