Racenet previews Group Racing at Rosehill and Flemington

Comments

Despite a few in the race who would need to grow a leg to win the inaugural All Star Mile at Flemington, there is plenty of quality in the field and the event will be the highlight of Saturday racing along with the Group I Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.

Race 2 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) Group III

Trekking is the early favourite in the Maurice McCarten however with the likelihood of a wet track he looks under the odds.

On the contrary, Easy Eddie is unbeaten on soft ground and was racing in career best form winning successive races at Warwick Farm and Kensington before finishing a close second in the Takeover Target.

He hasn’t raced for eight weeks but has been kept up to the mark with a Warwick Farm trial placing and looks better value than the favourite.

The tip: (4) Easy Eddie ($4.00)

Race 5 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) Group II

The fillies looks set to dominate the Phar Lap and happy to single out the Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant as the best of them.

A winner of two races in New Zealand before crossing the Tasman, Verry Elleegant won the Ethereal Stakes at Flemington in the Spring and her effort when runner-up in the Vanity resuming showed she has come back in good order. She will just need a touch of luck at the right time from the inside gate to be the filly to beat.

The tip: (11) Verry Elleegant ($3.80)

Race 6 Sky High Stakes (2000m) Group III

It was hard not to be impressed by the win of Red Cardinal in the Parramatta Cup resuming last start. The Kris Lees-trained gelding had the best overall sectionals in the race and was the only runner to record a sub 12 second split for the last 200m.

He tends to hold his form second-up and the likelihood of a wet track won’t harm his chances considering he finished third in the St Leger on a heavy track in the Spring. At $8.50 in early Sportsbet betting, Red Cardinal represents the value in the race.

The tip: (3) Red Cardinal ($8.50)

Race 7 Coolmore Classic (1500m) Group I

The Mick Price-trained Oregon’s Day finished a close second in the 2018 edition of the Coolmore and gets the chance to go one better from a favourable draw.

Oregon’s Day finished runner-up in the Francis Tressady at Flemington prior to her second last year and won the same race this year so she is in similar form and happy to have something on at the odds but it’s possible to argue a winning case for at least 15 of the starters, it’s that sort of race.

The tip: (5) Oregon’s Day ($13.00)

Race 8 All Star Mile (1600m)

What a terrific clash between the likes of Happy Clapper, Hartnell, Grunt, Alizee, Mystic Journey and Amphitrite and let’s hope the no-hopers don’t get in the way of the better class horses in the straight. Alizee has gone to a new level this preparation winning each of her three starts culminating in her Futurity win last start, she’s won two races at the mile and will take a power of beating.

Mystic Journey is the pride of Tasmania and should be under-estimated after beating the boys in the Australian Guineas last start. Happy Clapper hasn’t been able to match Winx in his two runs this preparation but no horse in the land can and in both starts he defeated the rest of the field comfortably. Terrific clash, forced to pick one it would be Happy Clapper at the odds.

The tip: (1) Happy Clapper ($5.00)
