Is It Coming Home?

In what’s already been a crazy, mixed up World Cup, and now it’s England’s turn. The Three Lions went into the tournament with low expectations, but as things have evolved, their crazed fans now think they have a real chance.

The other match features Sweden and Switzerland, two unheralded, but gritty and talented European teams.

Sweden v Switzerland

Two teams that weren’t highly regarded meet for a spot in the Quarterfinals. Many questioned the Swedes for not adding Zlatan Ibrahimovic to their roster, but they beat South Korea, lost in the last second to Germany and smashed Mexico 3-0. Switzerland started its campaign with an impressive draw with Brazil, then stunned Serbia with two late goals (and two late controversial political celebrations) before drawing with Costa Rica.
Goals scored: Sweden 5, Switzerland 5
Goals conceded: Sweden 2, Switzerland 4
Aussie fans should support: Probably lean towards Sweden. Let’s be honest, Swedes are far more likeable than the boring, neutral Swiss. And this Sweden team has overachieved tremendously, while the Swiss bring the baggage of controversial political statements that almost got three players suspended.

Prediction: Sweden on penalties.

$2.85 Sweden

$2.70 Switzerland

Colombia v England

Where to start? So many English fans have their young team in the Final already, possibly because they lucked out into the ‘weaker’ side of the bracket. Not sure they realise just how good this Colombian team is, even without injured James Rodriguez. The South Americans started slowly, losing 2-1 to Japan (in retrospect, no disgrace) but put 3 past Poland and then beat Senegal in their final group game to end up first in Group H. All hype aside, this should be a great match.
Goals scored: Colombia 5, England 8
Goals conceded: Colombia 3, England 3
Aussie fans should support: Depends what type of Aussie you are. Are you the ‘want the Poms to lose everytime they take the field in any sport ever’ type? Or are you a ‘well my grandparents came from there and I like tea and biscuits and I love the English Premier League’ Aussie? Pretty straightforward really.

Prediction: England in a high-scoring affair.
WIN-DRAW-WIN (odds subject to change)
$3.70 Colombia
$3.25 Draw
$2.10 England
